Brief History
  • Malasiqui became an independent municipality in 1671.
  • According to legend, three missionary priests were sent to this settlement located in thick woods, very tall grasses, surrounded by creeks and inhabited by dangerous wild pigs called animoloc.   The first two priests did not admire the place.  The first was said to have said “Mala” (Spanish for “no good”) while the other nodded in agreement and said “Si” (Spanish for “yes”).  The third priest, determined to settle with the natives, was heard to have said “Yqui” (Spanish for “so what?”).  The natives heard the short dialogue and thought that the priests were giving a name to the settlement.  From that time on, the settlement was known by that name.
