  • The Gov. Roy Padilla Sr. Park, is located at North Poblacion, has a 9-ft. bronze statue of the late congressman, a Japanese Lagoon Park and the Jose Maria Panganiban (JOMAPA) Monument (installed on February 1, 1985 by the National Historical Institute, the hero’s remains are interred here).

Brief History
  • Jose Panganiban was formerly a part of Paracale called Mambulao (a corruption of the Bicolano word mabulawan meaning “a place rich in gold”)
  • It was renamed after local son Jose Maria Panganiban (February 1, 1863-August 19, 1890), writer and leading member of the Propaganda Movement, on December 1, 1934 by virtue of Commonwealth Act No. 4155.

This lumber town and national port has high-grade iron ore deposits, with shaft and open-pit operations near the shore at its main mine at Brgy. Larap. Also one of the most important mining towns in Bicol Region, six of its barangays engage in gold mining. The town is a good place to buy gold.
