GENERAL INFORMATION (MARINDUQUE)

BOAC
- The hilltop fortress-like Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, at Brgy. Mataas na Bayan, was built in 1656. It houses the miraculous Ina ng Biglang-Awa (“Mother of Instant Mercy”), the province’s patron saint (in 1792) to which is attributed deliverance from a 19th century Moro attack. The revolution’s flag was brought here by Canuto Vargas to be blest in 1899. Its carved wooden portals are decorated with flora and fauna, cherubs and the images of the Four Evangelists: John, Luke, Mark and Matthew. The church’s well maintained and faithfully restored interior has brick walls, wall-hung period lamps, a ceiling with designs of Muslim brass gongs, two sets of Stations of the Cross (in wood and stained-glass windows) and three richly decorated and intricate retablos (altar backdrops).
- The small Boac Park, located in the heart of the town, was the execution site of Filipino revolutionaries and the surrender site of Filipino soldiers during the Philippine-American War.
- Beaches, located within 12 kms. of the town, include Balogo Beach, Baliasnin Beach (Brgy. Baliasnin), Ihatub Beach (Brgy. Ihatub), Laylay Beach (Brgy. Laylay), Lupac Beach (Brgy. Lupac), Sto. Domingo Beach, Sun-Raft Beach (Brgy. Cawit) and Tabing Dagat Beach.
- Kabugsakan Falls, in Brgy. Tugos, has a naturally formed waterslide. It is a favorite picnic site.
- Butterfly farms are located in Brgys. Amoingan, Bunganay and Cawit.
- Southeast of the town, in Brgy. Duyay, is Duyay and Talamban Caves. Known as the house of spirits, few have ventured to explore the entire length of the smaller caverns of Talamban and the tunnels of Duyay which feature an impressive interior with hanging stalactites and intriguing rock formations. It is estimated to end up in Brgy. Tapuyan in Gasan.
- Ginaras Falls (Brgy. Duyay)
- The Amoingan Coast, in Brgy. Amoingan, has dive sites 10 to 15 meters away with a wide variety of marine life including colorful butterfly fishes, clownfish, lionfishes and schools of angelfish.
- The Marinduque Branch Museum, at Brgy. Malusak, near Boac Park, is a branch of the National Museum opened last February 22, 1995. It is housed in an old, historic building built in 1887 and was formerly used as a boy’s school, jailhouse, a library and the Municipal Trial Court Bldg.. It showcases the province’s cultural and social heritage and displays artifacts found in caves, shells, vintage photos, antiques, Moriones masks, costumes and pieces retrieved from galleons still buried under the waters between Pingan and Melchor Island.

The 11-hectare Elephant Island, located offshore from Brgy. Lipata, is a 10-min. boat ride from the town. Formerly called Isla Perro, it has sheer cliffs and a 0.5-km. long white sand beach.

Inuman Bato (Drinking Rock), in the Suk'an District, is a tidal pool on the beach that is submerged during high tide. At low tide, the pool is filled with drinkable, fresh water. It was reportedly featured in the popular "Ripley's Believe It or Not" newspaper serial during the 1950s.

The 1,157-m. (3,797-ft.) high rarely climbed Mt. Marlanga overlooks the town’s Brgy. Lipata in the south. It is the highest mountain in the province and has three unique peaks. Brgy. Sihi, 36 kms. from Boac, is the most popular starting point for the leisurely 3-day hike.

Malbog Sulfur Springs, located at the foot of Mt. Marlanga, 3 kms. from the town in Malbog District, have therapeutic and healing properties said to cure certain skin ailments.

Pablo Pe's Bodega, along Don Cornelio St., next to the Pe House, was formerly the United States Army Signal Corps Headquarters (1945-1946).

GASAN
- Angela’s Garden and Tree Park, in Brgy. I, Poblacion (formerly Kawilihan Park) is located within a walking-distance from the center of the town. Planted with giant ipil-ipil trees, it is an ideal place for picnics and campings.
- Banot Beach is located 2 kms. from the town
- Masiga Beach, in Brgy. Masiga, is located 5 kms. from town.
- Talao Caves, in Brgy. Tiguion, are 12 series of caves overlooking the western part of the island. Set amidst a rain forest, it is accessible via three routes.
- Baluarte Hill, located on top of a one-hectare mountain near the ruined church of Gasan, has the remains of a ruined Spanish-era fortress.
- The Tres Reyes Islands were named after the Biblical Three Kings. Archaeological finds have been unearthed here and some caves have not been fully explored. All are ideal dive sites, having several good caves and walls and gorgeous sea fans. Diving season is April to October and jump-off point is Gasan. Boats for the islands can be hired from Brgy. Pingan. The uninhabited Melchor Island, also called Polo Island, has steep cliffs and underwater caves. The uninhabited Baltazar Island, also called Pangikol Island, has steep cliffs, underwater caves and an American-era watchtower. Gaspar Island, also called Manya Island, has a small village, clear blue-green waters and a short, lovely white coral beach which offers fine snorkeling and diving. In 1980, the wreck of a 15th century Chinese junk was discovered near Brgy. Pingan about 100 meters north of the island in 38 m. of water. A large number of ceramic pieces were recovered including Swatow porcelain, stoneware jars and some iron skillets.

MOGPOG
- Balanacan Pier, at Brgy. Balanacan, has a fine natural harbor. Offshore is an imposing Statue of The Mother of Biglang Awa. Off the pier, in 40 m. of water, is the sunken remains of a Japanese World War II MTB (motor torpedo boat) complete with depth charges still in their racks.
- San Andres Island, in Brgy. Silangan, has a spectacular white sand beach.
- The 8-hectare Nagtangco Island, located offshore from Balanacan Pier, has white sand beaches. Ideal for drift diving, its White Wall has excellent coral formations and its waters host Moorish Idols and butterfly fishes. There are also occasional sightings of manta rays and marlins.
- The seven-tiered, gently cascading and 100-ft. high Paadyao Falls, on a tributary of the Mogpog River in Brgy. Bukbuk, is set amid lush vegetation.
- The 3-chambered Tarug Caves, an imposing 300-m. high promontory located about 3 kms. from the junction of the National road at Brgy.Tarug, is a declared municipal park.
